How the time is enforced

Section timers run independently. When a section's clock runs out the next one begins, and time you saved earlier does not carry forward. The on-screen clock shows the minutes remaining in the section you are in, not in the exam as a whole, so pace has to be managed four times rather than once.

Which section runs tightest

English and Language Usage allows about 60 seconds a question, the least of the four. Mathematics is the most generous at roughly 90 seconds, but its questions take longer to work. Most students who run out of time do so in English or Reading, and almost always because they have not rehearsed at that pace.

What else takes time on test day

Plan on considerably more than 209 minutes at the venue. Everything below sits outside the testing clock, and how long it takes depends on the site and on how many candidates are being processed.

• Check-in and identification before you are seated.
• On-screen instructions and the tutorial before the first section starts.
• Storing belongings, which most sites require.
• A system check and room scan if you are testing remotely.

Confirm your arrival time with the testing centre rather than assuming. Arriving late is one of the few ways to lose a booking outright.

Are there breaks?

Break rules depend on whether you sit the exam at a school, at a testing centre or remotely, and they are set by the site rather than being uniform. Ask in advance, because leaving at the wrong moment can end a section you have not finished.

Practise under real time pressure

Sit at least two full-length timed sets before your date. Pacing is a skill of its own, and the first time you feel the clock should not be on the day it counts. Take a free TEAS practice test to see where your current pace lands, then work the section that ran closest to the wire.
