October 2026 - Text Structure Study Guide for nursing students in
Text structure is the pattern an author uses to organise ideas. Recognising sequence, cause and effect, comparison, problem and solution, or description helps you predict where evidence will appear and what relationship a question is testing.
Core ideas to know
Learn the relationships, not a string of isolated definitions. These are the facts that let you reason through unfamiliar wording.
- Sequence arranges events or steps in time and uses signals such as first, next, after and finally.
- Cause and effect connects a reason or condition to a result; because, therefore and consequently are common clues.
- Compare and contrast develops similarities, differences or both through words such as likewise, unlike and however.
- Problem and solution names a difficulty, then proposes or evaluates a response to it.
- Description or classification groups details around a subject or sorts examples into meaningful categories.
A reliable way to answer
Use the same short process every time so the wording of the question does not decide your method for you.
- State in a few words what each paragraph does rather than what every sentence says.
- Circle transition words, but confirm that the relationship they suggest fits the surrounding ideas.
- Choose the structure that explains the whole passage, not merely one paragraph inside it.
- Use the structure to locate an answer: effects follow causes, solutions follow problems and contrasts sit near pivot words.
Distinctions that earn marks
| Idea | What it means | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| Sequence | Events or steps in order | Cause and effect; order alone does not prove causation |
| Comparison | Two subjects examined by shared criteria | Description of only one subject |
| Problem–solution | A difficulty paired with a response | Cause–effect with no proposed remedy |
Read every word in the stem before choosing. HESI distractors are often true statements that answer a nearby question rather than the one that was asked.
Terms to know
- Transition
- A word or phrase that signals the relationship between ideas.
- Chronology
- Organisation according to time or event order.
- Classification

Key points
- Name what each paragraph is doing to reveal the passage-wide pattern.

- A passage may contain a small secondary pattern inside its main structure.

-
Question 1 of 3
A passage explains a staffing shortage, presents three scheduling plans and evaluates which plan best addresses the shortage. What is its main structure?
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Problem and solution
The shortage is the problem and the plans are possible solutions that the author evaluates. The passage may mention causes, but its overall job is to solve the stated difficulty.
-
Question 2 of 3
Which transition most clearly signals contrast?
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. However
However pivots from one idea to an opposing or qualifying idea. Consequently signals a result, similarly signals likeness and for example introduces evidence.
-
Question 3 of 3
Why is chronological order not automatically cause and effect?
Show the answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. A later event may follow without being produced by the earlier event.
Events can occur one after another without the first producing the second. Cause and effect requires a causal connection, not merely a position in time.
