October 2026 - Factors & Multiples Study Guide

Factors divide a number exactly, while multiples are the products made from that number. On the HESI A2, the distinction matters most when you simplify fractions, build common denominators, recognise divisibility and organise multi-step arithmetic.

Core ideas to know

Learn the relationships, not a string of isolated definitions. These are the facts that let you reason through unfamiliar wording.

  • Factor: a whole number that divides another with no remainder; the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12.
  • Multiple: a product in a number’s times table; 12, 24 and 36 are multiples of 12.
  • Greatest common factor (GCF): the largest factor shared by two numbers, used to reduce a fraction fully.
  • Least common multiple (LCM): the smallest positive multiple shared by two numbers, used as an efficient common denominator.
  • A prime number has exactly two positive factors, 1 and itself. The number 1 is neither prime nor composite.

A reliable way to answer

Use the same short process every time so the wording of the question does not decide your method for you.

  1. Decide whether the question needs something that divides the numbers (a factor) or something the numbers divide into (a multiple).
  2. Prime-factorise both numbers when the shared value is not obvious.
  3. For a GCF, keep shared prime factors at their lowest powers; for an LCM, keep every prime factor at its highest power.
  4. Check by dividing: a GCF must divide both numbers, while both original numbers must divide the LCM.

Distinctions that earn marks

IdeaWhat it meansDo not confuse it with
Factor Divides a number exactly A multiple produced by multiplication
GCF Largest shared divisor LCM, the smallest shared product
Prime number Exactly two positive factors Odd number; 9 is odd but composite

A common factor is not automatically the greatest common factor, and a common multiple is not automatically the least. The qualifier in the stem changes the answer.

Terms to know

Divisibility
The property of dividing with a remainder of zero.
Prime factorisation
Writing a number as a product of prime numbers.
Composite number
A positive integer with more than two positive factors.

Key points

  • Factors divide; multiples are produced by multiplication.
  • Use the GCF to simplify and the LCM to make a common denominator.
  • Always verify a proposed shared factor or multiple against both original numbers.

Review quiz

3 questions on this topic, each with the reasoning worked through. Pick an answer to see how it went, or open the explanation straight away.

  1. Question 1 of 3

What is the greatest common factor of 18 and 24?

    Answer choices for question 1

    Show the answer and explanation

    Correct answer: B. 6

The shared factors are 1, 2, 3 and 6, so 6 is the greatest. Twelve does not divide 18, and 72 is a common multiple rather than a factor.

  2. Question 2 of 3

What is the least common multiple of 6 and 8?

    Answer choices for question 2

    Show the answer and explanation

    Correct answer: C. 24

Multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24 and multiples of 8 are 8, 16, 24. Their first shared positive multiple is therefore 24, not merely any later shared multiple.

  3. Question 3 of 3

    Which number is prime?

    Answer choices for question 3

    Show the answer and explanation

    Correct answer: C. 29

Twenty-nine has only the factors 1 and 29. One is not prime, while 21 and 39 each have three as an additional factor.
